Three Mistakes I Made in Renewable Energy Projects (And How ABB Helped Fix Them)

If you're planning a renewable energy project, here are three things I wish I'd known before burning $8,600 and three weeks of delays.

Spend the upfront time on site surveys and battery temperature specs. Otherwise you'll end up like me, watching a $3,200 LiFePO4 battery bank refuse to charge because no one checked the ambient temperature. The ABB team on site told me later, “You're not the first.” That's not comforting when you're the one who signed off.

I've been handling renewable energy procurement and installation for about 7 years now. In my first year (2017), I thought I knew everything. I didn't. I've documented 16 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $26,000 in wasted budget. Now I run the pre-installation checklist for our team. Mistake #1: Assuming wind turbine installation is just a tower and blades

In September 2022, I ordered a 10 kW wind turbine from a reputable supplier. The turbine itself was fine. The problem? I ignored the foundation requirements. The concrete base they specified (per the manual) was 2.5 m × 2.5 m × 1.5 m deep – but our local soil couldn't handle it without pilings. We didn't discover this until the excavator arrived.

The result: $1,200 in extra foundation work and a 2-week delay. The client was furious. I later learned, from an ABB wind power application note (accessed November 2024), that “at least 30% of wind turbine installation delays are caused by inadequate geotechnical surveys.” Simple rule now: always hire a geotechnical engineer before ordering the turbine. Period.

Mistake #2: Ignoring LiFePO4 charging below 0°C

I didn't fully understand the danger of charging lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries below freezing until a $3,200 order came back completely dead. The battery BMS refused to charge because ambient temperature was −5°C. The manufacturer's datasheet (dated January 2023) clearly stated: “Do not charge below 0°C.”

But the spec was buried on page 12. I'd skimmed it. The customer's site was in a cold climate with no indoor shelter. We had to install a heated cabinet, adding $890 in cost and another week of labor. To be fair, the customer accepted the change order, but my credibility took a hit. Now I always check temperature specs upfront. ABB's energy storage system guides (as of December 2024) recommend “include a BMS with active temperature management if freeze protection is needed.” That line is now highlighted in our project template.

Mistake #3: Overlooking conveyor belt condition monitoring in a solar farm

Conveyor belts? In a solar farm? Wait – I'm a solar inverter guy. But we had a hybrid project: a 5 MW solar plant with a conveyor system for moving sand for on-site construction. The conveyor kept breaking down because of bearing failures. The ABB conveyor belt condition monitoring system (I installed ABB's CM40 unit after the third breakdown) caught the problem early. Before that, I used to think condition monitoring was overkill.

Seeing the data from that system – vibration spikes that preceded bearing failures by 72 hours – made me realize how much downtime we could avoid. Now I include condition monitoring in every project where moving machinery touches renewables.

So what's the bottom line?

Three mistakes, all preventable with better upfront planning. I went back and forth between “just get it done” and “do it right” for years. The right choice: spend 10 extra hours on specs, surveys, and temperature limits. ABB's level 2 charger did work flawlessly – but only because I finally followed the installation guidelines after those early failures.

Bottom line: An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions. I'd rather spend 10 minutes explaining options than deal with mismatched expectations later. That's the customer education philosophy that saved my career.

Granted, every project is different. Your soil may be perfect. Your climate may be tropical. But if you ignore the basics – like LiFePO4 charging below 0°C or wind turbine footings – you're probably leaving money on the table. Or dignity.
